MEMOIRS OF DEUTSCHLAND II SERIES, 1993Memoirs of Deutschland II Series
The bilateral relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of
Singapore have been very friendly and close over the years. In recent times, however,
some of our Asian friends have been wondering about whether the Germans were really
fully aware of the dynamics of the Southeast Asian region. The Embassy and the German
presence in Singapore and the neighbouring countries as all signs have indicated that,
economically, this region will soon be the most thriving in the world.
It is therefore very encouraging that the Federal Chancellor Dr Helmut Kohl will come
to the Asia Pacific region and pay an offical visit to Singapore on 22nd till 24th
February 1993. The visit of the Chancellor highlights a turn in the perception of the
region by German business which has been marked in November 1992 with the decision to
set up a German Centre for Industry and Trade in Singapore. Close cooperation betwen
the two countries becomes a reality as seen not only in the economics ties, but also
in the progressive deelopments in the cultural relations. Above all, I am pleased to
see that many Singaporean students have been enthusiastically learning the German
language; and world renown German artists such as Sergi Celibidache and
the Munich Phiharmonic Orchestra have visited Singapore recently.
Lin Hsin Hsin's artwork entitled :"Memoirs of
Deutschland" is quite a unique testimony of the cultural dialogue between two countries as she transformed the experience of
her visits to Germany, her interests and warm feelings towards my country into a series
of 55 abstract paintings.
I should like to express my gratitude towards Lin Hsin Hsin for presenting these
paintings in conjuction with the Chancellor's visit to Singapore.
