Kepler's Law on Asteroids
Kepler's First Law
Asteroids orbit the Sun in elliptical paths, not perfect circles. The Sun is located at one of the two focal points of the ellipse, not the center.
Kepler's Second Law
An imaginary line connecting an asteroid to the Sun sweeps out equal areas in equal amounts of time. This means an asteroid travels faster when it is closer to the Sun (at pehelion) and slower when it is farther away (at aphelion).
Kepler's Third Law
This law relates the orbital period of an asteroid to its average distance from the Sun. The square of the orbital period is proportional to the cube of the semi-major axis (average distance) of its orbit.
