LIN HSIN HSIN, Artist

INSPIRATIONS

Artist Lin Hsin Hsin who is also an Information Technologist and Poet. Hsin Hsin draws her inspirations from generic sources like music, nature, time and her travels abroad. Since the 80s she has been painting by theme and by series: Man and his Universe (82), New Waves (84), Light Waves (85), Music (87), Aqua (89), Memoirs of Deutschland I (89), Books (90), Time (91), Sun in the Studio (91), Man and Woman (91), Back
• to Nature (92), Memoirs of Deutschland II (93) Zoomorph Concerto (94), and Art, Science and Technology Series (94).

ART and MUSIC

Hsin Hsin paints with music and creates artworks from of music as seen in the Music Series. The forty five paintings in this series is a testimony of her music from nature (sound of the bird, water, echo in the desert etc) and man-made music (as in music composed by J S Bach, Beethoven etc).

ART and SCIENCE

-- Aesthetics With Scientific Disciplines

Over the years she has created nearly a thousand paintings using mainly oil -- her speciality, on canvas and paper. Her intimate understanding of the medium has lead her into successful implementation of disguising the properties of oil. In 1989, she has discarded the opacity of oil and pioneered the use of oil to look translucent like water-color. She is well-known for making oil to look like watercolor, pastel, pencil and Chinese ink wash.

Besides painting, Hsin Hsin has a large repetoire of work on paper. Besides monoprints, she makes papier coll­s, collages, collographs and paper sculptures using various types of handmade paper including lama paper (Nepalese), Korean paper, washi and artist handmade paper. In 1992, Hsin Hsin has pioneered the making of acid-free paper making using papaya, traveller's palm and umbrella plant.

In 1993, Hsin Hsin recycled old computer newspaper and make pebbles. This installation art is accompained by her digital video tape and poem. It is to conmemorate the 20th anniversary of the personal computer.

Hsin Hsin makes sculptures using plexiglass, a medium she discovered from using the material for framing.

Hsin Hsin also makes and paints on ceramics.

ART and COMPUTER

• Early 80s
  Hsin Hsin began using computer (CAD/CAM) to create 3D art
• 1988 - 1992
  Used Fractal Geometry to create still and even animated artworks
• 1993 - 1995
  Used image-editing software to create art, nevertheless, she has since, DEFIED these commercially available software by using ONLY a two-button mechanical mouse and a 16.7 million color digital palette to draw, sketch and paint 2D true digital art

  Her digital art was first exhibited in Singapore, 1994

• Since 1994 she has completely replaced her artistic creation by:
  - a 2-button mechanical mouse (ONLY)
  - algorithm driven processes
  - equations (ONLY) method

  Hsin Hsin forbids drag & drop, scan & morph, cut & paste processes to create digital art.

ART and POETRY

Since the mid-80s, quite often her paintings are accompanied by her poems. In her 12th solo, all the paintings in the thematic exhibition "Back to Nature" were created from the poem of the same title.

Education

Lin Hsin Hsin studied Art under Liu Kang and Cheong Soo Pieng in Singapore while at she was in school. Later, she learned printmaking from David Narker & Steven Lawlor of University of Ulster. In 1991, she studied papermaking from Mr H Kubo, Ogawamachi, Japan. She updates her knowledge in art by visiting museums, art galleries and contemporary art fairs all over the world frequently. She has visited the largest art exhibition in the world -- Documenta (nicknamed 100-day museum) in Kassel, Germany in 1992 & 1997.
